Background

History

The buzz of Yoga had just begun in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The Rashtrotthana Parishat, which was started under the guidance of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, also accepted the society’s desire to take up the work of spreading Yoga, and in 1972, the Rashtrotthana Physical Education Centre was started in Jayanagar. With the help of many donors from the society, including activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat, the Rashtrotthana Physical Education Centre was constructed in Jayanagar, Bengaluru.
Now for the education part. Ajith Kumar, who was a Pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, was known in the Sangh circles as a practical activist. At that time, he was already trying to make Yoga a regular part of the Sangha’s activities.
For this reason, he would take time off from his Sangha work and go to the internationally renowned Pattabhi Jois in Mysuru for 2-3 days a week to receive Yoga training. Ajit Kumar later learned Yoga from B.K.S. Iyengar too. Through their hard work, Yoga was also introduced into the activities of the Sangh. He himself stood at the forefront as a guide for this project of Rashtrotthana Parishat. One could accurately characterize the Rashtrotthana Physical Education Centre as Ajith’s ‘brainchild’.
Under his leadership, those working in various activities in Rashtrotthana Parishat and some Yoga enthusiasts came together and began practicing Yoga. He slowly began to connect these Yoga practitioners to Yoga classes one by one.
Thus, through his inspiration and influence, many learned Yoga, trained as Yoga trainers, and were appointed as trainers at the Rashtrotthana Physical Education Centre. Many of them dedicated their lives to Yoga education. Karnataka has contributed a lot in spreading awareness about Yoga both within and outside the Sangh.
